Topic of interest

When I started my study a couple of years back whit “bouwkunde” at the Hogeschool van Amsterdam, I started to whit the intension to do something whit construction. Later on this changed and I started to do building technology. But still, construction is a very interesting topic for me.

This is why whit this elective I wanted to do something whit a construction in a different way. Over the last decades, people have tried to change things in the construction in the façade, but not really whit flooring. Flooring always is a plain surface, sometimes whit different heights, but still plain. By changing something or taking a way something from what people expect, it will be more interesting for them.

The idea I had was to do something whit the floor, by using the forces working in and on the floor, changing the floor and landscaping it. In this way a different typology in flooring would be created.

  1. Dear Andjelko,
You're very consistent in misspelling with as whit. Your consistency is to be applauded, but it would read a lot better if you used the proper spelling.
    Kind regards,

  2. And now on your topic, there are a few examples of landscaped floors, such as in the Hundertwasserhaus. These might not share your starting point, but they may still be useful as references/precedents in order to define and distinguish what you want to achieve.

  3. ... also, you should definitely formulate your interest in terms of some research questions which you can answer by a hypothesis-and-test or similar process. (See Perla's blog for some quite clear examples.)

So far what I'm seeing in your posting are only two possible desired outcomes:
    - the floor will be more interesting for people
    and/or
    - a different typology would be created.

You need to think and write about how these claims can be tested and why they are desirable outcomes. Also think about whether any other desirable outcomes might result, and how those could be tested.

Please post more along these line tomorrow, in order to get feedback for your presentation on Monday.

  4. Andjelko,

in your proposal you are starting with a desired effect , the landscape like floor, but it is not clear yet from what it may be derived from and how its form would be decided upon and how it is different from a flat floor. You mention structural forces as a possible form giver, but tha does not make it clear yet what relation between flat and non flat exists and what responses would be desirable and which ones would not be. Also how would you formalize landscape like more to determine what aspects of it can be even translated into the much smaller scales of an interior space - many landscapes if trimmed to a floor plate of lets say 10mx10m would appear rather flat in such a setting, whereas what you are allude to in your image is probably something else - so it is probably not the direct translation. So please define what aspects and qualities of it you would like to translate into buildings as well.

  5. Andjelko,
by referring to the information promised today, here the link for some more references in precedent studies involving the topic you have chosen. If you whish, have a look especially at pp 420-437
